Lohan G (lohang)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Oct-2016 04:05:25 CEST Lohan G @jim @mcscx hierarchical view of threads (old school) encouraged those long conversations. Now it is difficult to make sense when you look at a conversation that goes 15-20 posts :-( -
Lohan G (lohang)'s status on Tuesday, 25-Oct-2016 03:25:52 CEST Lohan G A much needed feature for !gnusocial is a way to search within my current subscriptions. Right now I want to remove the old account used by @nds after subscribing to the new one. There is no way to get this done other than looking for it manually, page by page :-S -

Lohan G (lohang)'s status on Monday, 24-Oct-2016 17:27:17 CEST Lohan G @spaceman 2) I heard about free software through the local free software community. I got to know some of them online and they helped me getting started. At that point I was not fully aware of the significance of software freedom. I was primarily concerned about getting a secure and virus-free system. So I could stop worrying too much about losing my work, reinstalling the system, formatting and going through the same #Windows nightmares again and again. Around 2006 I accidentally deleted my Windows partition when installing GNU/Linux (Fedora 6 I think). I decided not to install Windows again because by that time I knew I could manage all of my work with free software. -
Lohan G (lohang)'s status on Monday, 24-Oct-2016 17:21:12 CEST Lohan G @spaceman 1) I am not a programmer. When Laconica was launched I was already a free software user. I heard about Laconica during those epic Twitter downtimes in 2008. Lot of people were looking for alternatives. If I remember correctly, Laconica was first mentioned on Linux Outlaws podcast. They discussed the importance of having distributed and federated social network; and about avoiding single points of failures. Soon I became one of the early users of #Laconica ( #identica ) Laconica was later renamed as StatusNet. It then became GNUSocial as a result of the merging of StatusNet and Free Social projects. -
Lohan G (lohang)'s status on Sunday, 23-Oct-2016 11:17:19 CEST Lohan G @abjectio Hey, please don't say sorry. This site is something you run voluntarily and the rest of us are getting free accounts! Thank you for running it :-)
4 gb sounds like a lot of memory. Is it normal for a !gnusocial instance (a "public" site as large as gnusocial.no ) to consume that much? Are you running quitter.no on the same database?
It would be useful to know the memory consumption of some of the other instances too. When I ran a single user instance on a shared host, my site was deactivated after some months due to overuse of resources... #thinkingaloud -
Lohan G (lohang)'s status on Monday, 17-Oct-2016 07:26:51 CEST Lohan G First it was due to lack of rain. It affects all the hydropower plants.
And this week it was due to a breakdown in a coal plant. http://www.economynext.com/Sri_Lanka_may_cut_power_until_coal_plants_are_re_started-3-6368.html This is why they started this 2 1/5 power cut. -

Lohan G (lohang)'s status on Thursday, 06-Oct-2016 09:07:20 CEST Lohan G //if the server disappears, you lose your account.//
next-gen social networks should be easy to self host. If the server disappears, it is your own server and keeping backups is your responsibility, so the account can be restored fast in your new server. Sadly, most of the alternative (possibly next-generation) social networks are still extremely difficult to self host. A vast majority of people still depend on servers they have no control whatsoever.... -
Lohan G (lohang)'s status on Saturday, 27-Aug-2016 06:55:12 CEST Lohan G I was blocked by a couple of Twitter users, and one user made her account private, thanks to usename collision. I thought it was useful to push all the notices to Twitter but it didn't convince any user to join the fediverse. Instead, my Twitter stream became a pain to follow and keep track of (if I looked at it from a regular Twitter user's view point.) So I decided not to push notices from here to there. -

Lohan G (lohang)'s status on Sunday, 03-Jul-2016 04:01:31 CEST Lohan G jitsi meet offers a similar service hosted on their servers ( https://meet.jit.si/ ) . And there is Talky too ( http://talky.io/ )
But I am a bit concerned about using other people's servers. This is a group of activists, and they are under surveillance. No doubt about it. Despite their ignorance about Skype and online privacy, they got enough resources and people to run their own servers. -
Lohan G (lohang)'s status on Saturday, 02-Jul-2016 18:47:29 CEST Lohan G Thanks very much! Yes, regular #jitsi works really well, and that is what I use most of the time.
It was very difficult to get this particular group to install it and register an xmpp account, due to various reasons (laziness and old habits mostly). So I thought installing jitsi-meet on a private server (and using it internally) is the best convenient solution for these people. The group has about 10 people and they exclusively use Skype for conference calls.
