Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Wednesday, 10-Aug-2016 14:53:08 CEST Temporary Marjolein I have now written out a 15-step plan for setting up my 'syncing and dancing' backup system. Actually the hardest part is that it involves several not-really-linux systems like phone (Android), tablet (Android), NAS (ADM), Fritz!Box router (in Amsterdam), and (???) router (in Groningen). I suspect (but have not yet verified) that the Ziggo router in Groningen runs some type of Windows. The only real Linux machines will be my laptop, workstation (to be upgraded/replaced) and netbook. #networking #backup #SSH #dynamicDNS --- Now that all the steps are written out, I can just start and work myself through them. I hope I have studies enough by now that this will be easy(ish). :) --- Yes, I'll keep notes! (I always do when installing/configuring stuff - at least when it's for the first time.) -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Monday, 08-Aug-2016 21:25:32 CEST Temporary Marjolein Giving up on trying to stay awake, I'll now switch from !coffee to !beer. If I do fall asleep, hen so be it - I've decided to skip the Tai Chi lesson #tomorrow and get this damned SSH working all around (need to be in physical proximity of the NAS until it's all set up properly). *sigh*. At least I'm making some headway with my notes describing how it _should_ work and what bits should go where to make it so... #ssh #sleepinducing -

Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Thursday, 18-Jun-2015 13:57:38 CEST Temporary Marjolein OK, I've finally worked out how the complex ssh - ssh-agent - ssh-add works, enough to write it up, which I've now done. Lots of pages hint at things, very few actually explain clearly what happens. Phew. Now, some grocery shopping first, and then I'll actually add a passphrase to one of my identities, and see if it all works as I now understand it should. :) #hal #ssh #ssh-agent #ssh-add -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Wednesday, 17-Jun-2015 22:48:57 CEST Temporary Marjolein Near endless digging today, because I didn't understand ssh-agent, how it works, and the role (if any) of ssh-add in this (because some explanations of ssh-agent do not mention ssh-add). Finally found an example script for starting ssh-agent - which also runs ssh-add. Do those who don't mention ssh-add maybe not know how ssh-agent is started? Is ssh-add run in their startup script while they don't know about it? That would at least explain the diffe…
