I'm trying to find a convenient method for converting articles and books to speech for listening during the day. eSpeak is the only recorder I've found for PC, but it doesn't sound nearly good enough for long texts. Pico TTS on Android sounds great, but it's not available for PC. I can use a #nonfree app called AtVoice to record texts as OGG files.

I still could not care less how "great" Netflix is as long as they insist on controlling your computer(s) with #nonfree software.

I currently try to install !debian over #WLAN (WPA2-secured) on my #IBM #Thinkpad #R51 (ipw2200 is used). First I needed to get an unofficial image with #non-free packages (firmware). Then I disabled #IPv6 as I don't have any of it:
ipv6.disable=1
I just needed to add that to the "expert install" image. Then I was able to choose my WLAN, choose WPA/WPA2 and entered my passphrase but it switched back. On error console I can see "couldn't connect to wpa_supplicant". Back to #LAN cable.

At least through the 6th generation of #videogame consoles you got to keep what you paid for. From 7th generation (Xbox 360, PS3) onward the software on your property is constantly being changed by remote control. #nonfree

@clacke Pah, that's lame and old. Thermostats need apps! and lot's of #nonfree software cuz that's cool.
-
@cmhobbs Thanks for informing me of this plethora of #nonfree spyware/malware computers in even low-end new cars.

And this is the reason why we cannot trust #nonfree hardware designs http://is.gd/gJk326 (look how many yes are there)

If real life were #nonfree; you'd never repair your vehicle, never read a used book, and never change the lock on your front door.

#nonfree software can make a computer do nearly anything and the user is powerless to stop it. https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/proprietary-surveillance.html

@cmhobbs No, thank you for adding your viewpoint to the thread. I'm not looking for a self-serving "developers suck" conversation. Short answer: it sounds like you and your employer are victims of rather than perpetrators of #nonfree social pressure.

@benediktg Another good idea is to point out the extreme anti-social aspect: "You're pressuring me to let my computer be controlled by an untrustworthy person". And always keep in mind that NO #nonfree developer can be trusted and specific+general examples of why.

I realized I'm not so concerned what harm software can cause me; I just think #nonfree software is an abuse of power over my PC in general.
-
@nigeldgreen@quitter.se It's just another blight on #nonfree software for me. I don't even want the possibility of such anti-features.

@stigatle@quitter.no @kzimmermann@quitter.se Replicant is pretty niche since it only supports a few devices and is missing #nonfree firmware for some major components.
