Then some will start their own instances, groups or organisations, and some will be recommended instances to join based on their preferences.
The thing with GNU social is that the federation doesn't care about having different directions. If two instances are of no interest to each other - or in spite of each other - they'll just avoid interaction. Just like how you and I probably don't email each other since we don't have any relation to each other - but the e-mail system still works globally. -

Snjór Hundur (hundur)'s status on Tuesday, 23-Feb-2016 20:17:04 CET Snjór Hundur @disassemblyline I pay great attention to the work by underpaid, unfairly treated workers that has been put into hardware I use. That is why I rarely ever buy anything newly produced, since it would give further profit to unfair businesses.
One might argue of course that not paying will make it even worse for sweatshop workers who might even lose the sucky jobs they have, but that's in my opinion another discussion since that issue should undoubtedly be discussed from the point of view that whatever jurisdiction they live in in the long term must be improved to disallow unfair treatment of workers. And as long as it's profitable to be unfair, that situation is not going to change.
