Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:06:07 CET Temporary Marjolein @erkan same as what? there's no context! -

Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:26:14 CET Temporary Marjolein @erkan I see :) but why a picture instead of connecting it up by means of a reply? now the whole conversation is broken in several pieces -
Erkan Yılmaz (erkan)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:28:17 CET Erkan Yılmaz perhaps !gs / !sn made an error ? -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:32:41 CET Temporary Marjolein You need to actually *reply* for the context to appear/be visible in identicurse (not just post a dent in a windows showing a conversation) - did you do that? I see these context-less dents more often from you. -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:34:25 CET Temporary Marjolein Also, see here: http://oracle.skilledtests.com/conversation/532320 your dent is at the top, not referring to anything (so it's not only identicurse) -
Erkan Yılmaz (erkan)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:34:39 CET Erkan Yılmaz the context-less dents are the old !gs anomaly, because the people I reply to are not known at the instance. I stopped subscribing from @question a while ago to people -
Markov Dosto(y)evsky (question)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:36:00 CET Markov Dosto(y)evsky the context-less are N O T the enduring and unchanging name Temporary Marjolein repeated this. -
Erkan Yılmaz (erkan)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:36:08 CET Erkan Yılmaz @mk my account here is following >2700 people -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:37:49 CET Temporary Marjolein @erkan oic - but then if you want to refer to something for me just '^' doesn't work, you know :( -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:42:54 CET Temporary Marjolein @erkan so that system doesn't work in the end ;-) -
Erkan Yılmaz (erkan)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:44:44 CET Erkan Yılmaz same as on oracle (with @question I also subscribed to everybody, but with my own account on oracle, to less people; so the context is always available via the bot's subscriptions). thus: I have here another account for reading slowly. in my stream under this account I dive in when I see interesting stuff, only -
Erkan Yılmaz (erkan)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:53:21 CET Erkan Yılmaz well, yeah, there's still no #parent_retrieval in !gs, but for me here at least I have all context. It's the other instances which have less context (or think I am crazy, talking to myself ;-)) -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 17:58:48 CET Temporary Marjolein @erkan it would be nice if contacts were pulled in not only for subscriptions but also for replies and mentions -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 18:00:28 CET Temporary Marjolein @mk @erkan in other words: focus on *contacts* rather than *conversations* to prevent broken convos #statusnet #gnusocial #featurerequest clacke repeated this. -
Erkan Yılmaz (erkan)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Feb-2015 18:06:07 CET Erkan Yılmaz yes, it's a known bug in !gnusocial !gs -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 08:58:57 CET clacke @mk Actually what breaks convos is the focus on contacts rather than convos. And with that, missing parent retrieval. lnxw48 (Linux Walt) repeated this. -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 12:42:58 CET Temporary Marjolein @clacke I don't understand what you're saying. "parent retrieval" is nothing but retrieving a dent made by a contact of someone in reply to a dent by this someone. by focusing on the convo you may miss some contacts. clacke repeated this. -
lnxw48 (Linux Walt) (lnxw48)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 13:02:04 CET lnxw48 (Linux Walt) @mk @clacke What about “conversation retrieval”? Find parents back to the original post that started a conversation, then retrieve the entire tree of responses (which may not necessarily all need to be displayed by default to all users or via all clients). That way, a ‘more’ button could present the entire conversation, rather than some fragment?
clacke repeated this. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 14:42:17 CET clacke @lnxw48 @mk Yeah, that would be great, but that would require some server to be responsible for the whole conversation. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 14:42:55 CET clacke @lnxw48 @mk This has actually been suggested for the W3 Social protocol, at least it was in one independent proposal, don't remember whose. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 14:44:12 CET clacke @mk We're probably talking past each other just by meaning different things by "focus on contacts". Today, server receives from my contacts. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 14:44:40 CET clacke @mk So when a person who is not my contact contributes to a convo, I miss it. If all participants are my contacts, I get the whole convo. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 14:45:40 CET clacke @mk A technical, protocol-level focus on convos would mean I subscribe to the convo at the responsible server and my server gets all dents. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 14:47:13 CET clacke @mk Parent retrieval would be a unilateral patch to the existing protocol, a patch that would at least partially remedy the situation. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 14:48:41 CET clacke @mk Parent retrieval would still miss unsubscribed conversation leaves, but at least it would give context to the notes you do receive. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 14:49:26 CET clacke @mk My manual fix to the problem is to redent posts I reply to, but apparently redents don't federate well either, and I often forget. -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 15:07:43 CET Temporary Marjolein @lnxw48 as it is now (if I understand correctly) dents from non-local people are part of a convo only if those people are already "known" on the node. What I prosed is this (quote): "it would be nice if contacts were pulled in not only for subscriptions but also for replies -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 15:09:27 CET Temporary Marjolein @mk @lnxw48 ...and mentions. If you just do that, I think the whole converssation would be shown automatically because all those people would be pulled in - just by pulling in ALL contacts, not just subscribed. -

mmn (mmn)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 16:00:09 CET mmn @lnxw48 I'm mostly curious about the exploitability of this. Can I tell a remote server to start fetchibg a bajillion fake notices and effectively DDoS a third party? And how do we minimize this risk _in_ the protocol/best practices? -
Andres (andresinmp)'s status on Thursday, 12-Feb-2015 01:13:43 CET Andres It was really cool to see !andstatus retreive 18 post from this conversation little by little. Still not grasping how this conversation thing works but it seems to mostly work for me. Roland Häder likes this.AndStatus and Roland Häder repeated this.
