I kept running into walls while trying to extract the game from the disc I bought for *Doom 3 BFG Edition*, so I gave up and downloaded the game from an alternative source.

That being said, Doom 3 is a beautiful #freesoftware first-person shooter #videogame. I'm really enjoying playing it.
-
@eric #Doom3 is free software? Where?
-
@roland @eric Id software usually releases their old engines as free software; I'm not sure if the game data files are free, though.
-
@windigo The data is not free, but I like it that way. I'd LOVE to buy lots of games to play on free software engines.

-
@roland The free software engine is here(1). The game data is commercial, but available in a few places. 1: https://github.com/RobertBeckebans/RBDOOM-3-BFG

@eric Agreed; I have no qualms about paying for the game data. I wish this was the norm in game publishing. :)
-
@eric I have #Quake4, would be worth testing?
-
@roland I would. It looks like Quake 4 and Doom 3 both use idtech4, but I don't see anything about Quake 4's version being released as free software. There's binaries for Linux, Mac, and Windows though.
-
@windigo If enough people buy games like that, I hope people with publish like that more often.
-
@roland Quake 4 is quite expensive on Amazon, I noticed.
