@evilbunbun I don't think "instance shopping" is necessary if we build the network through personal connections, invitations where people get time to talk to each other about it. Then some will start their own instances, groups or organisations, and some will be recommended instances to join based on their preferences.
The thing with GNU social is that the federation doesn't care about having different directions. If two instances are of no interest to each other - or in spite of each other - they'll just avoid interaction. Just like how you and I probably don't email each other since we don't have any relation to each other - but the e-mail system still works globally.
-
@evilbunbun This is of course up to each instance, but all instances that use the Qvitter interface are by default under the Terms of Use that state that no bad shit should go on. :]
-
@hundur Word. That said the random instance users being directed to from pump.io start page is one of the few things they did well over there.

@evilbunbun It would be a bad design to adapt user experience from handling Twitter escapee storms. Honestly I think it's good if most of such huge rushes (such as we had just two weeks ago) turn away. Anyone who reacts to well-expected behaviour (Twitter acting like it does) with panic (screaming and running away to the first choice presented to them) is likely a bad candidate for being a user in a social network I want to use anyway ;)
-
@vinzv That function implies all instances present in the randomization process are identical in policy and all represent "the pump.io way". I'm not even sure we should link anywhere on gnu.io/social

@evilbunbun At least I'm not in a rush to grow the network itself at any faster rate than mouth to mouth.
-
@hundur Good point. So maybe they should be pre-selected according to this.

@vinzv "Communists go here, liberals go here, anime avatars here and Germans go here."
-
@vinzv it's good to encourage segregation .)

@hundur Yeah, sort of. Maybe just an extended, polished version of the current /social/try page.
