@martin then it's censorship and it's bad

Interesting article about the #ShadwoBan on Twitter:
"In Twitter terms, it mean that the speaker can Tweet something and it seem completely normal. It will show on the speakers timeline and also on their profile. However, to followers, the tweet will never appear on the timeline. You wouldn’t see anything, making it look like a tweet was never posted. The only time you would see that Tweet, is if you went to the speakers profile. This is why it’s sinister. It’s more 1984 than 2016"

!GNUsocial has a similar feature for administrators called "Silence" #ShadwoBan #ShadowBan
-
Sorry, that's "Sandbox", not "Silence". And hardly sinister, it's a useful way of dealing with trolls who would just create a new ID if they were banned outright. #Silence in !GNUsocial is a more visible means of shutting down trolls, but less effective. #Sandbox #ShadowBan
-
Even better, you can set up your own !GNUsocial instance. So my GNUsocial timeline isn't polluted with trolls.
-
@moonman I first ran into the #Sandbox function while I was giving a demo of !GNUsocial at the KW #LinuxConf. Surprise! We had a conversation about it here shortly afterwards: https://n2.federati.net/conversation/71149#notice-71292

@bobjonkman2 Myeah, but for the optimal use case we'll have community/friendbased instances where shadowbanning is essentially only done on external accounts. So not as evil as it would be in a centralised system .)
-
@martin have seen that in different forums/social like HackerNews, A way to prevent trolls from creating new accounts and can be reverted
-
@bobjonkman2 yes, that is really a neat feature. :-) But just try to silence +100 #spammer account, per day ... Then you end up only silencing them. I had this after only a few hours I installed my (old) instance and I switched to invite-only. The #spam is now cut down to zero. :-)
-
For sure, as long as there are trolls and spammers a "Community" !GNUsocial instance works better than a "Public" instance.
-
I guess that's what happens when people trust their social media to someone with a profit motive.
-
@gomerx and even more dangerous is facebook that wants you to use real names for more efficient monetizing and censorship
-
They keep wanting me to give them my cell phone number - to protect my safety. :)
-
@gomerx think of the hackers and the children and the terrorists is a dangerous world :-)
