Yuri Albuquerque (denommus)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 03:20:57 CET Yuri Albuquerque It's been quite a long time. But I got interested in !nixos, does anyone else use it? clacke repeated this. -
mcscx (mcscx)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 03:41:21 CET mcscx "you write a specification of the desired configuration of your system in #NixOS’s modular language, & NixOS takes care of making it happen" -
mcscx (mcscx)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 03:44:54 CET mcscx @denommus Never heard of #NixOS, sounds innovative, but also like "too good to be true". I wonder if they can live up to the expectations. -
lnxw48 (Linux Walt) (lnxw48)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 03:54:42 CET lnxw48 (Linux Walt) @mcscx #NixOS and its #Nix package manager are the inspiration for #GuixSD / #Guix. -
Yuri Albuquerque (denommus)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 05:08:02 CET Yuri Albuquerque @jookia @koz @mcscx how much do you use it to create self-contained development environments? clacke repeated this. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 11:11:55 CET clacke @denommus I've been running it in a VM, mainly to try out #guix. I was running #nixos as the base OS and then mostly packages from #guix. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 11:13:00 CET clacke @denommus Now I'm running #guixsd, with #nixpkgs on the side for some software not yet packaged for #guix. Each OS have their strengths. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 11:15:26 CET clacke @denommus @jookia @koz @mcscx http://wingolog.org/ and https://identi.ca/cwebber/ have written a few things about using #guix for devenvs. -
lnxw48 (Linux Walt) (lnxw48)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 13:14:38 CET lnxw48 (Linux Walt) @clacke @denommus I tried #NixOS on one laptop about a year ago. I liked it, but everything must be compiled through #Nix. -
Marcus Maria (marcus)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 13:26:07 CET Marcus Maria @deavmi @lnxw48 similar to !guix but non-free :/ -
Marcus Maria (marcus)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 14:07:12 CET Marcus Maria @deavmi I do not find it that hard. -
Yuri Albuquerque (denommus)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 14:30:20 CET Yuri Albuquerque @clacke my problem with guix is that, unlike nix, it doesn't enforce purity. clacke repeated this. -
Marcus Maria (marcus)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 15:29:23 CET Marcus Maria @deavmi there is a documentation ;) -
deprecated_nds (oldnds)'s status on Wednesday, 16-Dec-2015 16:01:24 CET deprecated_nds @deavmi guix will be more intuitive if you are a lisper, but I don't think it is required. you basically just have to figure out the basic lisp syntax for config files -
lnxw48 (Linux Walt) (lnxw48)'s status on Thursday, 17-Dec-2015 05:49:55 CET lnxw48 (Linux Walt) @deavmi See https://nixos.org/ #NixOS -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Thursday, 17-Dec-2015 09:16:48 CET clacke @denommus Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean by purity. As far as I understand, it does. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Thursday, 17-Dec-2015 09:20:35 CET clacke @denommus Oh, you are talking about the language.
Build expressions use the store monad, so they're all pure. Not enforced, I suppose. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Monday, 21-Dec-2015 12:15:38 CET clacke @deavmi @denommus #nixos and #guixsd install method is the coolest. Define system, apply to reality. But some manual preparation necessary. -
Tristan B. Kildaire (deavmi)'s status on Monday, 21-Dec-2015 12:19:35 CET Tristan B. Kildaire @clacke they way you phrased that made it sound like a futuristic robot based movie. clacke repeated this. -
clacke (clacke)'s status on Monday, 21-Dec-2015 16:05:48 CET clacke @deavmi Go me then! That's how it feels to be using #nixos or #guixsd.
