@daw @nds @lnxw48 There was a wide outage of all the e14n.com hosted pump.io sites. What made things worse was that their email server was also down so I wasn't able to reach the admin :-) Anyway, they are now up again. We are working in the pump.io community to get the hosting distributed better.
-
@sazius @daw @nds Account issues at #DigitalOcean or failure of some key service that all VMs depend on?
-
@lnxw48 @daw @nds No idea unfortunately. Evan seemed to be able to fix it quite quickly once he was notified of the problem.
-
@sazius Do you know why hotpump.net is down for several weeks?
-
@heluecht No, I'll ask around in the #pump.io IRC
-
@sazius I already asked Evan via mail several weeks ago - but he hadn't answered yet.
-
@sazius @daw @nds Maybe not "all" E14N #pump.io sites. I was able to log into #identi.ca shortly after I noticed #microca.st's downtime.
-
@heluecht Yeah, he never seems to reply to emails...
-
@lnxw48 I think all E14N sites were down around Sunday-Monday. Now only some of them are :-)
-
@sazius @heluecht Ironically, https://twitter.com/evanpro has worked well for me when poking him about server issues.
-
@clacke Yes, that's what I used finally when I couldn't reach him by email :-)
-
@sazius @daw @clacke @nds #microcast went down 8 days ago (Friday). Ironically, spreading accounts over multiple #E14N hosted instances was supposed to prevent over-centralization, but most accounts are still on his servers, not self-hosted. I hope that both #Pump.IO and #GS users take note of the need for more !selfhost ed instances to help make the networks stronger.
-
Because I'm hosting other things on a single #IPv4 address, and because hosting behind a proxy is expressly non-supported, http://url.federati.net/xPKug I won't be hosting an instance myself.
-
@lnxw48 @sazius @daw My interpretation was always that multiple e14n sites were just a demo and a testbed to ferret out decentralizn issues.
-
@lnxw48 @sazius @daw Not a mechanism for true decentralization, because it can't be, with the same entity running all of them.
-
@clacke @sazius @daw @nds My impression based on what Evan said was that he was trying to avoid the "Everyone on #Identica" problem by making sure that people's contacts were scattered on multiple instances. (Of course, he was hoping that most people would soon host their own, too.)
-
@lnxw48 @nds @clacke @daw I think Evan was successful in that, i.e. forcing people to pick another node than identi.ca. The next step is to move the servers to different providers and have different people responsible for them. Evan has signaled that he is interested in doing that, but things are moving slow.
