@johnnynull @lnxw48 @aroque Ahh, I didn't realize you could set a group to private; that makes more sense now!
-
I wonder if I should make it impossible to have a "private stream" on a non-private !gnusocial instance, since it just causes confusion when notices don't federate.
-
Actually, !gnusocial even says it's "only to my followers" which makes no sense if _anyone_ can become your follower (i.e. you haven't also chosen a moderated subscription policy). I guess this is a pretty quickly resolved usability issue.
-
@mmn ideally those two features could be merged into a "protected account" feature, that worked federated as well. but lots of work...
-
@mmn what is a private stream?
-
It means one has to be logged in to the site to see your posts. Which is impossible for users who do not have a local account.
-
@mmn Do you want to disabe private conversations on public instances? Not such a good idea. If the instance is public, sometimes people (on same instance) want to write privately to each other.
-
@roland @mmn Perhaps removing private streams and instead enabling direct messaging across instances?
-
@dianalace i think they both can co-exist. Since private messages don't have all features (only text) than private dents have (like hashtags?).
-
@windigo +42 ! cc mmn
-
@roland Perhaps; I've never used private messages before, so I'm not sure what their use case is.
-
@windigo they are like direct messages on #twitter.
-
@roland I've never used Twitter before, either. ;)
-
@windigo good point. :)
-
@roland Apparently I am not the person to be discussing features with! I really only use public messages and @-replies. :D
-
@windigo sure thing.
-
@windigo If you could send private messages, you could send me your ATM PIN. ;-) @roland
-
I agree with @roland on this, although the feature is only half baked and may lead to confusion. Private dents between local users work ok making direct messages a redundant feature for me. I'd rather have proper private fedreated dents, but that's quite some work I guess.
-
Perhaps one could make the private lock only work if the recipient is local user or group thereby removing some confusion and unexpected outcomes?
-
@aroque @roland That would make sense; they seem to cover a lot of the same use case, but neither works.
-
@aroque @roland Do private posts to people on same instance really stay private? It seems to me that I occasionally see messages meant to be private to his girlfriend. Same-instance DMs worked when I tried them. (Have not tried recently.)
-
It works if you select the recipient from the dropdown menu (I just sent a test private dent to @abjectio, which you shouldn't see). It doesn't work if you only mention the user in the notice keeping everyone as recipient. That should be fixed in the UI, I agree it is terribly confusing.
-
@windigo private dents are more general in that you can also send them to local groups.
-
@aroque Wouldn't sending private dents to groups defeat the purpose? If anything, the behavior wouldn't be obvious.
-
@windigo Think about an admins group. It could be useful to discuss common issues away from non-admins' eyes. Except that would require "private" to work across instances. @aroque @roland
-
@windigo you can send a private dent to a local group even if it is not private, in that case it should behave as @johnnynull says
