@larjona @marcus indeed the article is really interesting. If you have a business model like GitLab, no matter if I like it or not, MIT license is probably not even a bad choice. At least it allow competition in contrast to AGPL + copyright assignment where one company has the monopoly on the business model. At least it is not that easy to decide in such a case.
Then join a friend, build small groups and host in there.
The problem is not the license (as also stated in the article), but the Opencore Business model. I prefer fully Free/Libre Software and enterprise service for those who want to pay for. In owncloud it has been a good balance, as the Enterprise customers normally need more stable and longer supported software, which is a fair deal imho.

I know that, thanks.
@marcus @bes !selfhost ing in small groups can help a lot. You are correct that maintaining systems can be too much work for one part-time person. That is less of an issue once you get a small group joining together to host a service they all use.
that's at least how we do it. In this case I am the admin atm, but it could also be someone else. @lux is doing similar things afair.
But we got the advantage that I got a synchronous 1Gbit/s fiberchannel connection at home ;)
@larjona @lnxw48 @marcus Yes, this is a option if you have more than one person with the necessary knowledge and time in the group. Otherwise it will be even more work for this one person. Building such a group might be possible for us but I doubt that this works for large parts of our society.
I stopped searching for solutions for 'a large parts of our society' back in the 90s ;)
@bes @lnxw48 @larjona @marcus In the end, it is just a question of trust.
Who do you trust, where will you store sensitive data?
If you trust your hoster, everything is good. Otherwise you have to head for other solutions.
