@ghostdancer @cyberkiller I don’t want the results Google thinks I am looking for, I want the results that my search terms call for.
- lnxw48 (Linux Walt) and simsa0 repeated this.

!Privacy #security #Lazyweb I want safety from search engine surveillance to exist. But my understanding is that the search results we “have grown accustomed to” are made possible because #Google‘s algorithms track us… so how can StartPage manage to give us these results while protecting us from 3rd-party tracking? https://startpage.com/search-privately/ !surveillance

@laurelrusswurm IMHO i'm afraid you can't , you can get good results but no so "tailored" or adapted to you and your uses
-
@laurelrusswurm #Google's results were better than most competing search providers even before they got into advertising and developed tracking systems to support it. #Startpage, #Ixquick, #DDG (to the extent that they use Google for their results) can hook into that without forwarding info about users.

@laurelrusswurm Note, though, that the ability to provide search results derived from #Google (or #Bing or #Yahoo or #Baidu or #Yandex ...) is mostly dependent on the provider's current terms of service. At any time, those providers can say "provide individual data or lose access to our search results". This sword of Damocles hangs over all similar search intermediaries ( #Startpage, #Ixquick, #DDG, #Dogpile, and even !Selfhost ed #Seeks instances )

@laurelrusswurm For now, I mostly use #DDG, #Startpage, !yacy, and occasionally use @jpope's #seeks instance or go directly to #Google or #Yahoo. By spreading searches out, I hope to make trackers less effective. (Be aware that #YaCy's results are still abysmal for most things I search for.)

@laurelrusswurm In that case startpage.com will give better results for you than Google.
