Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Feb-2015 07:29:44 CET Temporary Marjolein @lnxw48 ha! but there were spammers right from the start there - have any anti-spam tools/plugins/etc been installed? Roland Häder likes this. -
Roland Häder (roland)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Feb-2015 07:34:20 CET Roland Häder @mk there is almost nothing really good doing against #spam as they can use typers to fill out #captcha -s and scripts for analyzing the email for confirmation links. -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Feb-2015 07:40:57 CET Temporary Marjolein @roland I never, ever suggested that captcha is in any way effective against spammers. On the contrary, I have always warned that it it isn't! Same with email verification. In fact most captchas are solved by software these days, the manual 'data entry' workers are mostly already replaced by software. But there are other types of defense... Roland Häder likes this. -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Feb-2015 07:43:10 CET Temporary Marjolein @roland of course the fact that two effectively 'outmoded' methods don't really work any more is not in any way proof that there is "almost nothing really good doing". -
lnxw48 (Linux Walt) (lnxw48)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Feb-2015 16:34:51 CET lnxw48 (Linux Walt) @mk Yes, the forum has anti-spam tools installed. Presently most spam sign-ups are immediately diverted into the spam trap (which I have to empty, ten accounts at a time).

mmn (mmn)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Feb-2015 16:37:35 CET mmn Haha, I thought that was killed at the same time as the status.net wiki. -
Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Feb-2015 20:49:18 CET Temporary Marjolein @lnxw48 ok, that's something! but the "10 at a time" sounds rather suboptimal ;-) -
lnxw48 (Linux Walt) (lnxw48)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Feb-2015 23:39:59 CET lnxw48 (Linux Walt) @mk Really suboptimal. Each group of 10 spammers takes 3 clicks to delete.

Temporary Marjolein (mk)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 06:23:53 CET Temporary Marjolein @lnxw48 could this be scripted? -
lnxw48 (Linux Walt) (lnxw48)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 06:43:53 CET lnxw48 (Linux Walt) @mk Possibly. I know I’ve seen sequences of clicks scripted in the #Windows world, as long as application being clicked puts things in the same place each time. Maybe the !tcltk #expect application could do that. (I’ve been wanting an excuse to explore Expect.)

aqeel (aqeel)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 07:42:40 CET aqeel @lnxw48 Shouldn't we move the forum and rename it to GNU Social? -
mcscx (mcscx)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 10:58:11 CET mcscx @lnxw48 there are Firefox addons for automagically clicking buttons, filling in text boxes, etc. -
lnxw48 (Linux Walt) (lnxw48)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 12:12:40 CET lnxw48 (Linux Walt) @aqeel Something like that. I’d like to see the !sn forum closed and a new forum (pick something more spam-resistant than VanillaForum) created for !GNUSocial.

aqeel (aqeel)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 19:04:40 CET aqeel @lnxw48 discourse! Let's go with discourse! BTW What's the issue that's holding the migration back? Can't we just ask Evan to close the forum, and then setup a new one? lnxw48 (Linux Walt) repeated this. -
mmn (mmn)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 19:20:03 CET mmn We could just setup a new one and stop caring about the old one until Evan closes it because of all the spam. Roland Häder likes this.lnxw48 (Linux Walt) repeated this. -
mmn (mmn)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Feb-2015 20:30:04 CET mmn I just wish to note that I wouldn't be bothered maintaining and moderating a forum. And probably wouldn't hang out there and would require pings from other people to hop in and answer stuff :P Roland Häder likes this. -
lnxw48 (Linux Walt) (lnxw48)'s status on Saturday, 11-Jul-2015 09:24:42 CEST lnxw48 (Linux Walt) @mmn @aqeel I'm already used to visiting the old SN forum and performing #spam_patrol duties. I'm sure I could log into a GS forum 1-2x per week or more (depending, of course, on the work schedule) for moderating and answering questions. That is, if you're still considering #Discourse or similar (please no #VanillaForums). -
Marcus Maria (marcus)'s status on Saturday, 11-Jul-2015 10:02:46 CEST Marcus Maria http://flarum.org/ might be an option too (not that I am a big fan of forums at all :)) lnxw48 (Linux Walt) repeated this. -
aqeel (aqeel)'s status on Thursday, 23-Jul-2015 08:10:13 CEST aqeel @lnxw48 @mmn So, who is going to host it? Let's start nagging them until they give up and host something! :D
Though, ideally, we should just have a separate GNU Social installation where guests can also post, or maybe something like #newhere tag in Diaspora.
